In 2007, the residents of Banbury saw the introduction of a May Day Celebration, something which hadn’t happened in Banbury for very many years.
The Town Council works with Verna Wass, a local free-lance teacher and local schools. Local schools can receive a pack containing a wealth of information relating to May Day in general, including a music project, garland making instructions, hobby horse making notes, historical notes, details of the suppression of May celebrations in Banbury and a chance to learn traditional and maypole dances.
By 10am school children from many local schools descend on the Town Hall and form a procession accompanied by traditional musicians and Morris dancers and all make their way to the Fine Lady on a White Horse statue by Banbury Cross. Traditional dancing and music greets the May Day morning around the Fine Lady Statue and spring flowers are strewn around her feet.
The procession then returns to the band stand in the High Street for more singing and dancing by local school children and the chance to show off their maypole dancing.
The morning ends with light refreshments in the Town Hall.
