An Olympic theme for this year's Town Mayor Sunday and Hobby Horse Day in People's Park on Sunday 8th July 2012.

The Olympic torch may not have visited Banbury but we had our own Olympic Event.

Town Mayor’s Sunday attracted hundreds of families to People’s Park on what turned out to be a mostly sunny day instead of the expected rain.  The day began with a procession from the town hall to the park led by the The Shires Royal British Legion Youth Band followed by civic dignitories, hobby horses and local clubs and organisations.

Adults and children made the most of the good weather and crowded around the arena to watch fancy dress competitions and  hobby horse races and joined in with demonstrations of boxing and T’ai Chi.

Opening and closing ceremonies were performed by members of the Sharon Green and Joanne Mills dance academies and Banbury Harriers Athletic Club organised obstacle races for youngsters.

Charity stalls and food and drink sellers were busy, while the mobile bar and refreshment tent also did good business.

Town Mayor Cllr Tony Ilott said: “The day was a great success. The weather was kind to us and we had a massive turn out despite the counter attractions of the F1 Grand Prix and Wimbledon.  I would like to thank everyone who took part in the races and the entertainment, and all those who spent money at the charity and other stalls.  “I enjoyed the day and I hope everyone else did.”
