Banbury Canal Day 2012
Theme - 'Gangsters & Molls'
Banbury Canal Day has grown from a small provincial event to one that attracts boaters, crafters, traders and visitors from all over the country. The main thrust of the day has to be the canal itself, with commercial boats booked in and water taxis to move visitors around the site.
The Mill Arts centre opens its doors for a day of entertainment, food and drink whilst General Foods Garden hosts a free folk concert adjacent to the towpath. Sovereign Wharf is the place to be for boat rides whilst being entertained by barrel organs whilst you wait to board. Tooley's historic boatyard displays engines and boats, with a change to watch a blacksmith at work.
Hook Norton Brewery will keep the ale rolling and ample food outlets keep the hunger at bay. With an abundance of traders, falconry, fairground and lots to see and do its time to take a visit to the annual Banbury Canal Day. Free to enter, free to browse and free to smile and enjoy yourself.

The brand new Banbury Food Festival will recognise and explore the high quality and wide range of food and drink produced and available in the town and surrounding area.
It will celebrate the art of food and drink making, and provide an opportunity for visitors to sample the friendly and sociable atmosphere that accompanies eating and drinking – with friends or with strangers. Most of the exhibitors will be small, independent producers who specialise in non-supermarket type food, beer, wine and cider. Local people, and visitors from further afield, will be able to see, taste, and buy some of England’s best and freshest food and drink.
The event, organised by Banbury Town Council, will be a popular day out for thousands of people who appreciate, or who are just curious about, good food.
The ‘free-to-enter’ festival will be held in the centre of one of the most famous old market towns in the country. The food fair will be housed in the town’s Market Place, the home of the original Banbury Cross.
Visitors will be able to browse around a mixture of stalls selling and offering samples of a wide range of produce. They will also be able to watch food preparation and cooking demonstrations, and ‘ready, steady, cook’ type competitions. It will be a day of pleasure and fun for young and old. The atmosphere of the event will be very special – something to remember.
The well-established Banbury Flower and Produce Show will run alongside the Food Festival. Local gardeners who have grown fruit, vegetables, or flowers on allotments or back gardens, plus people who have made jams, chutneys, cakes, etc in their own kitchens will enter around 90 classes in the hope of winning an award from the group of experts who will judge the entries.
All in all, there will be plenty to see and do on August 19 – at Banbury’s Food Fair

Children of all ages are being invited to discover what life was like when their grandparents were teenagers. Youngsters will get a taste of the 1950s when Banbury celebrates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June with a massive street party in the town’s Market Place.
Children who hear their grandparents say ‘when I was young’ will find out what they are talking about. They will experience life before every house had a TV and will play games such as hopscotch and floor snakes and ladders.
1,000 children will be given a post-war style ration book token which they will be able to exchange for a plate of typical 1950’s food.
Banbury Town Council is organising the party which will take place on Sunday 3 June between 1.30pm and 4.30pm. The afternoon will begin with a civic service in St. Mary’s Church, Horsefair, Banbury, at 1pm followed by a procession to the Market Place at 1.30pm.
The afternoon is not exclusively for the 1,000 children with ration books.
There will be plenty to do for everyone and a big screen in the Market Place will look back at royal events over the last 60 years beginning with the Coronation in 1953. The 1950s theme will include traditional games and activities for all the family, plus Punch and Judy shows, face painters, stilt walkers, balloon modellers, and a ‘galloping horses’ carousel. Hop-scotch, floor snakes and ladders, hula hoops, and skittles are just some of the activities planned.
The ration book tokens will be distributed mainly through Banbury primary schools with others being held in Banbury Town Hall.
Lighting of the Beacon
The council is also planning a second celebration on Monday 4 June with the lighting of the beacon in Spiceball Park.
Towns across the country will be firing-up beacons in sequence and Banbury is expecting to get the go-ahead between 10pm and 10.30pm.
The lighting will be followed by a spectacular firework display by Fantazia fireworks, the company responsible for the fireworks at the town’s Christmas Lights Switch-On.

Banbury Town Council is busy in the planning of many of its annual outdoor events.
The fourth Banbury & District Show will again fill Spiceball Park with a day of fun and entertainment for all the family. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 10th June, commencing at 10.30am.
Banbury Town Council is pleased to announce it has formally adopted the Banbury & District Show and will now bring in line this event to that of all other Town Council events. This is wonderful news for the Show as members of the public will incur no charge to enter the event…yes completely FREE. Definitely a fabulous opportunity to bring the family down to enjoy a fun-filled day for all.
Banbury Town Council continues its wonderful working partnership with the Rotary Club of Banbury, Rotary Club Cherwell and Banbury Cross Round Table. All have supported this event from its early days and continue to play a vital role.
Applications are now welcome for traders, charities and organisations to request a trading pitch. A fantastic opportunity to raise a business profile or valuable funds for worthy causes.
For more information on all aspects of the Banbury & District Show or to request application forms please call 01295 250340.
