Park Ranger Service
The Park Rangers are a front line service provided as part of Banbury Town Council's commitment to safe and enjoyable parks and open spaces within the Town.
The Ranger Service encourages and promotes the use of parks and open spaces by assisting with the running of many of the town's annual events. These include Banbury in Bloom, Banbury Show, Banbury Canal Day, Christmas Light Switch-On, Fairs and Hobby Horse Festival.
The Service also undertakes the inspection of all of the town's play-areas and teenage areas and plays a vital role in helping to maintain these areas by repairing damaged items of play equipment. They aid the development of new play-areas by providing practical knowledge and expertise and also help to run the People’s Park Community Garden. This Garden gives members of the community an opportunity to learn more about horticulture and gardening in general. Volunteers are able to get involved in a wide range of activities, including the growing of vegetables, herbs and flowers and the carrying out of minor landscape works.
Park Rangers also work with members of the community, schools and various community groups to improve their local environment. This includes planting trees, shrubs and bulbs. Community Action days have taken place in Hillview Park, Spiceball Park and the Linear Walk and are proving most successful.
As part of the Banbury in Bloom competition the Rangers hold work-shops within schools to stimulate interest at an early age in nature/ecology. The workshops have included learning about birds and how to build nesting boxes and the growing of sunflowers.
The Park Ranger Service provides a vital link between the users of parks and open spaces and Banbury Town Council.
Plant Giveaway
Twice a year, Banbury Town Council hold a plant giveaway in the Community Garden to recycle the spring and summer bedding plants from the colourful displays in People's Park. The park rangers are on hand to offer advice and help distribute a large selection of flowers. The next giveaway will be advertised on the website, so bring a bag to fill with plants and remember to get there early to get the best selection.
Bat Walks
The Park Rangers have held bat walks within People's Park, starting with a talk on bats and offering the chance to see bats up close. Just after dusk, those attending set off into the park with special bat detectors and soon pick up signals from feeding bats. Everyone got the chance to watch the bats as they flew around the park. It is anticipated that more bat walks will be arranged and the dates will be advertised on the website.
