Beating the Bounds
The tradition of “Beating the Bounds” has existed in various forms in Britain for thousands of years.
It was crucial that the Parish could define its boundaries to ensure no encroachment took place. Therefore knowledge of boundaries was very important, these would usually be marked by roads, paths, streams and marker stones. In days gone by boys were usually taken along and not only the boundaries, but the boys were beaten at key points to reinforce in their minds the boundaries so they could in turn teach and beat the next generation!
