Tree Planting

Princess Diana Park

To complete the refurbishment of the park which re-opened Thursday 22nd April 2010, Brethertons Solictitors of Banbury donated 5 large trees to be planted next to the play area as an addition to this wonderfully landscaped area, and they were on hand to undertake the planting with the Park Ranger Service.

St Louis Meadow
Banbury Town Council joined forces with the Banbury Sea Cadets to undertake a Community Action Day in St Louis Meadow Park.  The Action Day took place on Saturday 20th March 2010 and involved planting up an area in the park with trees and shrubs. Over 2000 whips, small plants of trees and shrubs were planted.  The trees and shrubs were specially chosen to be in keeping with the rest of the plants in the park and to encourage wildlife.

Jon Cox of Banbury Sea Cadets remarked that the whips were planted as 2010 marked 150 years since the Cadet movement first started, when the Cadet Corps were formed to help bolster the country’s defence numbers following heavy losses in the Crimean War. The whips were provided by the Woodland Trust as part of an initiative to encourange the planting of trees.

Also, one of the trees was sponsored by a resident, Mrs Butler and the Town Council’s Mayor, Councillor Tina Wren kindly agreed to help Mrs Butler plant her tree. Mrs Butler's tree is an Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’. This is an excellent specimen tree with dark green foliage that turns a lovely yellow in the autumn.

Councillor Colin Clarke, Chairman of the General Services Committee, who was responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the parks and open spaces in the town, commented “We were delighted to be working with Banbury’s Sea Cadets on this scheme.  The Town Council has held a number of Community Action Days and they have all been very successful in helping to improve the town’s parks and open spaces. St Louis Meadow Park is a lovely natural park and we hope this scheme will only enhance its beauty”
