Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day 2023

On Sunday, November 12th, Banbury Town Council hosted its annual Remembrance Day commemorations.

Remembrance Sunday offers a national occasion to contemplate the service and sacrifice of individuals who have protected our freedoms and preserved our way of life. We pay tribute to the Armed Forces and their families, recognising the essential role played by the emergency services. Additionally, we honour those who have lost their lives due to conflict or terrorism.

Huge crowds gathered along the streets to participate in Remembrance Sunday, expressing their respects for the men and women who lost their lives in two world wars and subsequent conflicts.

Commencing on Broad Street at 10:15 am, approximately over 450 participants joined the parade, led by a police escort, marching up High Street and Horse Fair to St Mary’s Church for a memorial mass attended by a specially invited congregation.
The service was broadcast on speakers outside the church for those unable to be inside, and individuals at home had the opportunity to watch a live stream of the proceedings.

Following the service, hundreds of people gathered in People’s Park to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial. More than 50 wreaths were placed on the cenotaph by representatives of military and municipal organisations. Standard bearers lowered their standards as buglers sounded the start and finish of a one-minute silence. Subsequently, the parade returned down High Street for a remembrance salute.

Two new additions to this event were the introduction of live music in the Grand Hall reception where local 1930’s performer Beau Norton performed classics from Vera Lynn and others.

Additionally, the civic department invited local art students at Banbury college to offer their perspective of Remembrance day and generously display these at the reception.
As a town, we come together across faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth.

(Remembrance Day was organised by Banbury Town Council and the Royal British Legion (Banbury branch).
